Data in our lives

There is 40 zettabytes or 40 trillion gigabytes of data in the world today, year 2020!

The volume of data is increasing at a faster rate than ever before. We create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data each day1 !!! i.e. equivalent of 2.5 million billion 1 terabyte hard drives. The world internet population has increased 27% in past three years.1,2

About 1 billion hours of videos are watched on YouTube daily and it has 2+ billion users that is one-third of the internet population.3 There are over 100 billion messages shared over facebook everyday.4 Google daily searches rack up to a staggering 5.8 billion i.e. about 70,000 searches per second.7 These are mind boggling numbers that will only continue to increase as we make our way into the 21st century. By the year 2100, the global population is expected reach 11.2 billion5 from today 7.8 billion. Then, the world internet population could have reached 6.7 billion!

This vast amount of data has already started changing the way we live. For example, very rarely do we run to a post office to post a letter to our family. Instead, we simply type a message over a phone or send an email. Moreover, the way educational system exits today is also changing rapidly. These days online classes are available for students that do not require you to go to a university building to take classes. One can also enroll in degree programs online that are offered outside your geographical location. Even our buying habits are changing. Today we can order almost every household item over an e-commerce site such as Amazon and magically it gets delivered to our door step. Overall, the world big data market is expected to grow from 42 billion in the year 2018 to a whopping 104 billion by the year 2027.6

Thus, it is critical for businesses to embrace data and allow it to guide business decisions. Because, ignoring data and data driven decision making could cause the businesses to lose their competitive edge or even face extinction.6 Hence, consistent efforts are being made by business to employ various types of data insights to support their daily activities. We see either mobile apps or websites even for local businesses such as restaurants, coffee shops, railway or train stations, airports, market places, movie theatres etc. This is really encouraging and exciting because it creates new opportunities for analysts, data scientists, data engineers, coders and developers.

Thus, now and in future, the demand for data skills will continue to grow as more and more data is generated every second. The world needs people who have the skills that can help businesses make sense of their data and help them grow.
